Crunchyroll and VPNs (2026): Region Locks, the Ban Question and Travel

Posted Oct 26, 2026

Crunchyroll's terms ban VPNs by name. Under a heading called "Geo-restriction Evasion", they say the use of VPNs, proxy servers, IP spoofing or similar methods to get around its geo-filtering is "strictly prohibited", and the same rule covers buying from the Crunchyroll Store. So switching your VPN to another country to reach a bigger catalogue, or to pay a cheaper regional price, breaks the agreement and puts the account at risk. For travellers the honest answer is simpler: where Crunchyroll is offered, use the local service; keep the VPN for securing public Wi-Fi.

Crunchyroll prohibits VPNs and proxies used to get around its region checks, including for purchases. It can suspend or close accounts for breaking its terms. Watch what's licensed where you are, and don't sign up through another country's prices.

Most results for this search rank VPNs by how well they unblock the US library. We read Crunchyroll's terms of service and its US plan page from a US connection on 18 October 2026, and quote both below so you can see what the service itself says about location, bans, downloads and travel.

Can you use a VPN with Crunchyroll?

Technically a VPN may connect; contractually, using one to change where Crunchyroll thinks you are is off limits. Section 5 of the terms, "Access and Use of Services", lists things you agree not to do. One is to use "any technology or technique that obscures or disguises your location when you are accessing a Crunchyroll Product", with the clarification that VPNs, proxies and IP spoofing aimed at its geo-filtering are strictly prohibited. The next item bars misrepresenting your identity, which is relevant to anyone tempted to sign up with another country's details.

Section 7 explains why the checks exist. Crunchyroll says some content is limited to certain places by licensing deals and regulation, that it may use different technologies and verification methods to find your location, and that this may require you to turn on location access on your device. You also agree to use the service only in countries or regions where Crunchyroll officially offers it. For the general mechanics behind these checks, see our explainer on why streaming services block VPNs.

Will Crunchyroll ban you for using a VPN?

It can. The suspension clause in section 2 lets Crunchyroll suspend, limit or terminate an account "for any reason or no reason whatsoever, with or without notice", including when it decides you have broken a material term. Crunchyroll doesn't publish how often it acts on VPN use or what triggers it, and we found no official figures, so we won't guess at odds. The practical point is that the terms give it the power, and a ban costs you a paid subscription and your watch history at the same time.

Closing an account isn't the only lever. The same clause lets Crunchyroll limit access, and its location checks exist to stop unlicensed titles playing in the wrong place. A VPN user may simply find that titles refuse to play; that outcome and an account suspension both rest on the same rules.

Why the anime catalogue changes by country

Anime streaming rights are licensed territory by territory. A studio or distributor may sell a series to Crunchyroll for one group of countries and to a different service, or a local broadcaster, somewhere else. Crunchyroll's international terms say content, features and plans can vary by territory because of licensing, regulation, classification rules, language availability or changes in rights, and that it may use geolocation or IP address to enforce those limits.

That's why "best VPN country for Crunchyroll" is a common search, and why we don't answer it. Picking a country for its catalogue is exactly the location disguise section 5 rules out. If a series isn't on Crunchyroll where you live, check your local services for it, or wait: the terms note that availability changes over time and from place to place.

Flow chart for travelling Crunchyroll subscribers. Is Crunchyroll offered where you are? If yes, watch the catalogue licensed there, which may differ from home. If no, the terms say not to use it there, and downloads need periodic online checks. In both cases, a VPN or proxy used to change your apparent location is prohibited.

Travelling with your subscription

Before a trip, find out whether Crunchyroll is offered in your destination. If it is, you're using the service in a place where it is officially available, which the terms allow, but expect that country's line-up rather than your home one. Some shows you follow may be missing or arrive on a different schedule, and features and plans can differ too; the plan page itself warns that benefits may vary by region.

If your destination isn't one Crunchyroll serves, its terms ask you not to use it there. Offline viewing is no guaranteed fallback. Every US plan includes downloads, but section 7 says downloaded content is licensed only while your subscription is active, on a limited number of devices, and is subject to expiry rules that include "required periodic online verification". An episode saved before you fly may stop playing if the app can't check in, and the terms offer no travel exception. Crunchyroll's US plans, as of 18 October 2026

Crunchyroll's premium page listed three US plans, each plus applicable taxes and each with a 7-day free trial for new and eligible subscribers. Fan costs $9.99 a month and streams on one device at a time. Mega Fan costs $13.99 and streams on four, adding Game Vault and Store perks. Ultimate Fan costs $17.99 and streams on six, adding Crunchyroll Manga and further Store perks. All three are ad-free and include offline viewing. Those are US prices. Crunchyroll's terms say plans, prices and payment options vary by territory, and signing up through another country to pay less runs into both the geo-restriction rule and the ban on misrepresenting your identity.

Using a VPN the way it's meant to be used

On hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi a VPN still earns its keep, because it keeps your logins and browsing away from the network. Set it to connect on untrusted networks, and when you stream Crunchyroll, either switch it off or exclude the app from the tunnel so your real location is used. Avoid free VPNs that fund themselves by collecting your data. If you want a paid option, NordVPN and Proton VPN both document split tunnelling in their apps, which lets you leave one app outside the tunnel. Both are affiliate links: ReelRoam is paid a commission when you sign up through them. Our best VPN for streaming guide compares providers, and does a VPN slow streaming? covers speed.

Edge cases

  • Store purchases: the geo-restriction rule explicitly includes buying from the Crunchyroll Store, so the same location rules apply to merchandise.
  • Location prompts: if the app asks for location access, that's the section 7 verification at work, not a fault.
  • Sharing a login with relatives in another country: section 2 limits accounts to your immediate household at the same address and calls unauthorised sharing a material breach.
  • Subscriptions billed by an app store or partner: whoever takes the payment, Crunchyroll's own terms apply to how you watch.

Crunchyroll and VPNs: quick answers

Does Crunchyroll allow VPNs?
No. Section 5 of its terms prohibits any technology that disguises your location and names VPNs, proxy servers and IP spoofing aimed at its geo-filtering as strictly prohibited. The rule also covers Crunchyroll Store purchases.
Can Crunchyroll ban my account for using a VPN?
Its terms let it suspend, limit or terminate an account with or without notice, including for breaching a material term such as the geo-restriction rule. It doesn't publish how often it does, so treat VPN use as a real account risk.
What is the best VPN country for Crunchyroll?
We don't recommend one, because choosing a country for its catalogue is the location disguise Crunchyroll's terms prohibit. Libraries differ because anime is licensed by territory; watch what's offered where you live or travel.
Can I watch Crunchyroll downloads abroad?
Not reliably. Downloads are licensed only while your plan is active and need periodic online verification, and the terms bar access from places where Crunchyroll isn't offered. Check that your destination is served before relying on them.
How much is Crunchyroll in the US?
As listed on 26 October 2026: Fan $9.99, Mega Fan $13.99 and Ultimate Fan $17.99 a month, plus applicable taxes, with 1, 4 and 6 simultaneous streams. Each has a 7-day free trial for new and eligible subscribers.
